Professor Michael Schneider of Imperial College tells Alan Keys about how stem cell research is leading to treatments for heart disease. Michael describes how the availability of stem cells allows his team to determine the molecules involved in heart cell death and also how to protect those cells from death during a heart attack. Michael foresees a near future where stem cells are combined with other therapies to both repair hearts and enable hearts to self-repair. Alan Keys had his own heart repaired during an operation some years ago and currently chairs a British Heart Foundation patients committee. The British Heart Foundation part-fund the work of Michael's team at Imperial College. This interview was edited down from the original 35 minutes conversation. This discovery, led by experts in immunology, Drs. Zihai Li and Bei Liu, builds upon a century old theory that immunizing with embryonic materials may generate an anti-tumor response by "fooling" the immune system into believing that cancer cells are present. The finding potentially opens up a new paradigm for cancer vaccine research. youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be "By using a probe to shine a light on the tumour, the antibodies at the right place in the body can be brought to life. Any antibodies in the rest of the body will remain dormant, meaning side effects can be minimised. The activated antibodies then cause immune cells in the blood called T-cells to attack the cancer." The Brownsville man is now behind bars and facing multiple federal charges. Prosecutors allege Morales was part of a cross-border scheme. According to a 19-page indictment unsealed on Wednesday, he's accused of making more than $1.5 million dollars injecting stems cells into people with cancer, multiple sclerosis and other incurable diseases. Morales and another man were featured for the bogus cure on the cbs news program 60 minutes last year. An FBI investigation into his activities ended with a grand jury handing down a 19-page indictment last month. Records show Morales falsely claimed to be a doctor. He allegedly used a po box from the UPS center in Brownsville as a front for his bogus Rio Grande Valley medical clinic. The indictment says he received numerous shipments of stem cells at his home off Hackberry lane in Brownsville. An FBI investigation show the stems cell came from this maternity clinic in Del Rio, Texas. The clinic's owner Jose Alberto Ramon is also named in the indictment. In a phone interview Ramon claims he's never met Morales and thought he was donating the umbilical cord for research. South carolina pathology professor Vincent Dammai is the third person named in the indictment. He's accused of harvesting the stem cells and selling them to Morales.

26-year old Jonathan Dieleman has an easy smile and a tireless work ethic. Raised on a cattle farm in Smithers, Jonathan was dirt biking last year when he hit a rock and broke his back. Jonathan was diagnosed a T-5 paraplegic - he couldn't move from the chest down. 3 months ago Jonathan travelled to China where his own stem cells were mixed with stem cells from a donated umbilical cord and injected in his body. Immediately after, Jonathan says he gained more core strength and stability. Jonathan moved to Victoria to train at a special gym called Path SCI. Doctors in China were clear - recovery would only come with hard work. Jonathan exercises every day in the hopes that as the injected stem cells replaced the deadened ones - his brain to muscle communication is restored. Last week for the first time since his spinal cord injury - Jonathan pedaled a stationary bike under his own steam. He still doesn't understand how this breakthrough was achieved. In part 2 of this series we'll meet a Victoria man who is taking steps after having embryonic stem cell injections in India. Follow Meribeth Burton on Twitter - www.twitter.com
